An Art & Architecture Atlas of modernist and contemporary works is showcased in a space where the public is surrounded by pieces of the most iconic local creative minds together with younger contemporary artists, photographers and designers that share architectural elements as their language.
The intersection between art and architecture is one already present in Chicago, as the Architecture Biennial concurrently starts with the run of Expo Chicago. Exhibit A.A.A., organized by Bergamin & Gomide and curated by Sol Camacho, explores this interchange between practices and how it was and has been particularly proficuous in the case of Brazil. The exhibit spatializes a gray area of practice, visible in formal relationships, resemblances and connotations. By putting works next to each other a latent conversation through time and space is formed - between a photograph and a painting, or a sculptural work and an entire house. As problematic as the word atlas can be, evoking a long-past modern illusion that the entire world, country or discipline could be contained in a single description, the spatial and visual relationships established between the objects selected and the clear geographical condition that binds them is reminiscent of a visual atlas. The actual work is a constellation, something that does not encompass everything but connects many things. A small atlas, if there can be such a thing. The exhibit operates by gathering and arranging works that intersect in familiar themes. There is the idea of [Blocks], as a solid unit that aids modularity. There are [Pillars] as elements of both suspension and grounding, slim but structural. There are [Walls] and barriers, as necessary to architecture as they are problematic in the Brazilian sociopolitical context. There are also [Surfaces], decorations, geometric patterns that are powerful in their two-dimensionality. More figurative notions in architecture are also present in the exhibit. The exterior of a building is its [Façade], composed of legible elements that can be interpreted more literally by an artist or completely subverted by an architect. The interior, an approximation to architecture, is composed of both [Texture] and [Color], shown in furniture, rooms and inner corners. Among many possible formal procedures applied to both art an architecture, the exhibition also focuses on [Subtraction], be it the carving of a piece of wood or the absence, with traces, of the wood used in shaping a concrete house. Finally, it showcases interpretations of [Transparency & Shadow], which can happen in the opening of a window or in the overlaying of meshes in a piece of art or a sunlit roof. Art and architecture that have intersected in Brazil have both been openly political, be it within the philosophy of the modern movement or as a contemporary critique of segregation and lack of public spaces and opportunities. At the same time, they have also been very experimental in formal terms, always a step ahead from their sources, continually evolving. The selection of works cuts transversally through disciplines and decades. Mostly Brazilians, but also foreigners working in Brazil, make up the list of authors selected for this show. Sculpture, furniture, architectural models, paintings and photography create a small immersive and highly symbolic universe of Brazil in Chicago. |
